Hierarchy and Chinese Womanhood in Hong Kong — A Shocking Insight

I want to share with you a story about my best friend Jodie. Although it was shocking to Jodie and me, we also come to realise how stereotypical this is from the perspective of womanhood in Chinese culture. You must read this article if you and your family don’t belong to the same culture. Because cultural difference is real.

Jodie and I were both born and bred in Hong Kong. A place that, up until the recent years of protests and police violence, was one of the biggest economy in the world. We are one of the Four Little Dragons of Asia.

Given Hong Kong was a British colony, it was very common to send their children to study abroad in Britain. The fantasy of going to a boarding school with a common room, playing lacrosse and wearing checked skirts and blazers, were Jodie’s and my dream. It’s like Harry Potter minus the magic, we’d take it!

But studying abroad doesn’t only mean British accent and fish and chips. Over the past fifteen years, Jodie and I have our individual journeys of understanding ourselves, as women, and as expats, which in turn shape and form our identities and values.

As it turns out, these identities and values couldn’t be more far away from our home town.
